A topic that gets a lot of discussion among dieters is "metabolic syndrome" -- and it doesn't have an absolute definition. People with metabolic syndrome tend to gain weight easily and have a harder time losing. If you have 3 or more of these factors your doctor may diagnose you with with Metabolic Syndrome:
- Tummy Obesity: A waist measurement of 35" or more for women and 40" or more for men.
- Low HDL Cholesterol: This is the "good" stuff that can protect against heart disease. Low HDL is <40.>
- High Fasting Blood Glucose: Defined by a blood sugar level of 100+ after fasting (not eating) for 8-12 hours.
- High Triglycerides: Considered borderline at 150 mg/dL and high at 200+ mg/dL.
